BIS Contract with Vodacom is a Rip Off

I’m on contract and always browsed and downloaded for free for the last year. Just recently I received the account that said I owe R500 for data and email charges. I called customer care to find out how this charge of R500 came about, and was told that I mustve used a charged site. How am I suppose to know which sites are charged sites?

I read that I could even be charged for a certain type of application when I download from blackberry app world. I’m afraid to upgrade my applications or download new applications cause I’m not sure what will charge me. I don’t even use my internet browser anymore because I’m not sure which sites will charge me.

Where can I get a list of all the charged sites and why couldn’t you let customers know that you started charging for downloads. I got a blackberry for the main purpose of using the internet and downloads. Really not happy with vodacom and the lengths to which they go to rip their customers off to make money.

Can’t wait for my contract to end so I can leave vodacom with all your other blackberry users!

  1. Dear Sir/Madam,

Prior to March ’12 I had a Blackberry 8520 Curve for about a year on contract and warranty with Vodacom.

In March 2012 I took my phone to Vodacom Repair Centre as my phone’s keypad froze. All my data was lost. It took them about +- 3 weeks to check. On arrival to collect it I was informed it could not be fixed and I was getting a NEW phone. The lady brought the NEW phone from the back (strangely the same colour)- I asked why it was not taken out of a sealed box and was advised “you only had a problem with your phone, not the contents”. That was no excuse not to take the phone out of the box in front of me. I asked if there were other colours and she said “this was your previous colour”.

On 3 July 2012 (three months later) I have the exact same problem –I returned it and demanded a new phone taken from a sealed box in front of me. The story then changed that I got a refurbished phone – I was shocked – so originally the phone was given to me under a false pretext that it was NEW – I queried this and the lady said “yes it is NEW but we say refurbished because of some number change at the back of the phone”. I said to her how can the phone be NEW and refurbished!!! – she said “well that’s what we call it”. I then asked for the Manager and was told by her that the decision to give me a new phone does not lie with them and that Blackberry/Vodacom do not give clients new phones.

It is clear now that the phone I got in March was my original phone which was fixed and given back to me as how can my original phone and a “NEW refurbished” phone have the exact same problem three months apart.

On the first occasion I had the inconvenience of losing all the data and struggled to get some numbers back into the phone –half of which I’ve lost completely – now I have to repeat this process yet again – the expense of travelling to the Repair Centre miles from where I live and the inconvenience of being without a phone as Vodacom have no Blackberry replacements. Further why should I pay for a phone not in my possession and sent as far away to your head office in Johannesburg for repair as there is no local office to fix Blackberry phones in Cape Town. If Vodacom cannot offer an after sale Blackberry service locally then they should NOT be selling it to customers.

I am disgusted at the bad customer service and lack of empathy shown.

Please note I am refusing to take any refurbished phone again. My 2 year warranty was on a NEW phone not on a refurbished phone.

I trust this matter will be sorted out and look forward to hearing from you. I reserve my rights to take this matter to the Public Protector.

    Yours faithfully,
    DEBBIE

I have a similar propblem with Vodacom – my blackberry account was astrononmical – my contract has now ended – my contract what should have amount to approx . R5000 for a 2 year period – ended up around R15000 – dont be bluffed – they skillfully work on your ignorance and your trust in their advertising – save this money – read carefully – even if you consult a lawyer before signing – they salesman is never qualified to give you advise – hope my mail makes a difference to others
