On Interstate 55, the Dixie Travel Plaza, formerly the Dixie Truck Stop and the Dixie Trucker's Home, can be found in McLean, Illinois. In 1928, J.P. Walters and John Geske opened a tiny sandwich stand in the back of a truck mechanic's shop on the old US Route 66. By 1930, they needed a full-sized restaurant to meet the rapidly increasing demand. After a fire in 1965, the restaurant had to be rebuilt, although later extended it again. The Route 66 Association of Illinois has acknowledged Walters, Geske, and the Dixie Trucker's Home for their contributions to Route 66's identity from 1926 through 1977.
