From 1901 through 1985, Gulf Oil was a significant global oil firm. Gulf Oil was a member of the so-called Seven Sisters oil conglomerate, the eighth-largest American industrial firm in 1941 and the ninth-largest in 1979. In the 1980s, Chevron sold parts of the original Gulf business to Cumberland Farms Inc., a regional convenience store chain. Chevron has licensed Gulf gas stations in 11 northeastern states for the past 20 years. In 1985, Gulf Oil Corporation (GOC) combined with Standard Oil of California (SOCAL). It was renamed Chevron in the United States as a result. The gulf is a "new economy" company in its current guise.
