Bruno and Sergio Costa founded Costa Coffee in 1971 as a wholesale operation supplying coffee to caterers and Italian coffee shops. Having been acquired by Whitbread in 1995, it was sold in 2019 to The Coca-Cola Company for £3.9 billion and now has 3,401 stores across 31 countries and 18,412 employees. Over 6,000 Costa Express vending machines are located in the UK, and there are 1,280 Costa Express outlets overseas, of which 460 are in China alone.
For $5.1 billion, Coca-Cola is going to buy Costa from Whitbread PLC. As a result of the deal, Coca-Cola now controls strong coffee platforms across Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa.
