Commercial bank headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, CIBC Bank USA was founded in 1957. PrivateBancorp Inc., founded in 1989, was acquired by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) in June 2017 for US$5 billion. In buying the firm, the Canadian bank enters the American retail and investment banking market for the second time.
As of 1991, the first office was opened in Chicago by PrivateBancorp, which was established in Delaware in 1989. In June 2017, CIBC completed its acquisition of PrivateBancorp following a series of discussions between the two companies. CIBC branding was adopted in September 2017 by the subsidiary.
