What Is Vibe Coding?
Updated Nov 3, 2026 · 4 min read
Vibe coding is creating software by describing what you want to an AI system, then steering the generated code through prompts and observed results. In its stricter meaning, the person accepts code without fully understanding or reviewing it, which separates vibe coding from reviewed AI-assisted development.
What Does Vibe Coding Mean?
The phrase describes a development process, not a particular product. A person asks for a working application, tries the result, and asks the model to change whatever looks wrong rather than writing every implementation detail themselves.
Andrej Karpathy introduced the term in February 2025, according to the Wikipedia account of vibe coding. The distinction matters: using an assistant while reading, testing and taking responsibility for its code is not the same as accepting whatever it produces.
For buyers, the useful question is whether this process can produce a dependable replacement for a rented workflow. Our guide to vibe coding SaaS replacements connects that question to software purchasing rather than treating a working screen as a finished business system.
Why It Matters to Software Buyers
A team may rent a large application mainly for one approval queue, intake form or reporting screen. Generating an initial version makes it easier to explore whether that narrow workflow belongs in custom software instead.
That does not make an existing subscription unnecessary. The vendor may also provide permissions, backups, support, integrations and operational knowledge that do not appear in a quick demonstration.
Before renewal, list what people actually use and what would break if the subscription disappeared. Separate the visible interface from the services underneath it, then compare a scoped replacement with keeping the existing product. A credible alternative starts with those boundaries, not with a screenshot.
How It Shows Up in Practice
Consider a hypothetical operations team building a request tracker with Cursor. It describes a form, a status board and an approval step, then checks the generated application against sample requests; this is an illustrative workflow, not a reported customer saving.
Another team might use Claude Code from Anthropic. Its official overview describes working across files and tools to build features and fix bugs, but those capabilities do not certify the resulting application for business use.
A team evaluating coding assistance from OpenAI faces the same ownership questions. Whichever assistant produces the code, someone must review access control, dependencies and deployment before coworkers depend on it.
Compare the scope with build examples, while keeping prototypes separate from maintained production systems. A convincing replacement handles exceptions as well as the happy path shown in a demo.
Can Vibe Coding Replace a SaaS Subscription?
Sometimes the replaceable part is small enough to own. A read-only dashboard or low-risk request queue is a more bounded starting point than payroll, payment processing or a shared system of record.
Start with internal tools whose users can tolerate a controlled pilot. Keep the original system available while checking imports, permissions, exports and exception handling against a written acceptance list.
Choose Build part of it when a custom interface can sit above a reliable rented service. Choose Build it only when the team can operate the whole scoped workflow, and Keep paying when the packaged product fits or nobody can maintain a replacement.
A replacement should also survive the original builder leaving. Store source code and deployment credentials in company-controlled accounts, and ask a second maintainer to deploy a clean copy from the documentation.
What Should a Buyer Test Before Launch?
A prompt is not an acceptance test. Write observable requirements first, including what the application must refuse to do, and have someone other than the builder try to break them.
- Access: confirm users cannot read another team's records or grant themselves additional permissions. Test this with separate accounts, not just the administrator's session.
- Recovery: delete a test record, restore a backup and confirm that exported data is readable outside the application. Document who performs each step.
- Changes: rerun tests after generated edits, especially when a small request changes shared code. Require review before changes reach the production environment.
If these checks expose work the team cannot own, reduce scope or hire a qualified maintainer before launch. Do not make the renewal deadline the reason to skip testing.
How Should You Compare the Full Cost?
Use the Build vs. Buy Calculator to compare more than the first build. Include discovery, review, migration, hosting, model usage, monitoring, support and time spent maintaining integrations.
Treat projected savings as estimates and state the assumptions, following our methodology. Count only subscription costs that can actually be removed; a surviving annual commitment is still payable even if the replacement works.
Assign an owner and a maintenance budget before approving the project. Set a review date and a fallback plan, including how users return to the rented workflow if the pilot fails.
The practical decision is whether owning this particular workflow improves cost or fit enough to justify responsibility. Generating code can help answer that question, but it cannot answer it on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is vibe coding the same as AI-assisted coding?
No. AI-assisted coding can include careful review and testing, while vibe coding in its stricter sense relies on generated results without fully understanding the code.
Can a nondeveloper vibe code an internal tool?
A nondeveloper can generate a prototype and describe useful requirements. A production tool still needs qualified review, an operational owner and a recovery plan.
Does vibe coding remove SaaS costs?
Only if a dependable replacement lets you cancel costs you would otherwise pay. Hosting, maintenance, model usage and remaining contract commitments still count.
Who owns a vibe-coded application's maintenance?
The business must assign that responsibility to an employee or contracted maintainer. The coding assistant is not a support agreement.
What is a sensible first project?
Choose a narrow, low-risk workflow with clear acceptance tests and an easy fallback. Avoid beginning with a critical system whose failure could stop the business.
