What Is SaaS Churn?

Updated Oct 28, 2026 · 4 min read

SaaS churn measures the customers or recurring revenue a software vendor loses during a defined period. Customer churn tracks departing accounts, while revenue churn tracks lost subscription revenue, including downgrades. For buyers, evidence of departures can prompt questions about value and service, but it does not establish why customers left.

How Is SaaS Churn Calculated?

For customer churn, divide customers lost during the period by customers present at its start, then express the result as a percentage. Keep the period and customer definition consistent before comparing one figure with another.

The customer churn explanation from Stripe describes this relationship between departures and the starting customer base. New customers acquired during the period do not erase the fact that earlier customers left.

Check whether a vendor counts a customer as a company, a workspace or a billing account. Also ask when cancellation is recognized, since a notice submitted today and a subscription ending next quarter are different events.

How Does Customer Churn Differ From Revenue Churn?

Customer churn gives each lost account one count, regardless of its spending. Revenue churn gives more weight to larger subscriptions and can include reductions from customers who stay on a cheaper plan.

Stripe's revenue churn guide distinguishes gross revenue churn from net revenue churn. Gross churn measures lost recurring revenue, while net churn also accounts for expansion from existing customers.

This means a vendor can lose customers while expansion elsewhere offsets the lost revenue. Ask for the underlying definitions rather than treating a retention headline as proof that nobody is cancelling.

Monthly and annual measures are not interchangeable. Compare matching periods and customer segments, and do not turn a monthly number into an annual claim by multiplying it without accounting for how the customer base changes.

Why It Matters to Software Buyers

A departure by another customer can reveal a question worth asking about renewal terms, support or product fit. It is not, by itself, a reason to move your own business: first determine whether the same issue affects your workflow.

Comparable customer churn figures may not be publicly available for the vendor you are evaluating. Ask the vendor directly what it discloses and separate verified figures from anecdotes in sales conversations or review sites.

Use The Software Hate Index as a ranking of buyer pushback, not a measured churn rate. Read our methodology before interpreting the evidence, and do not convert complaints into an estimated cancellation percentage.

For your own decision, record current spending, essential work and the cost of an exit. A signal becomes useful when it leads to a contract question, a product test or a reference call.

How It Shows Up in Practice

For a buyer reviewing Slack pricing and alternatives, cancelling a workspace and removing an individual member are different decisions. Slack's billing status guidance distinguishes inactive members who retain access from deactivated members who no longer have access.

That operational distinction is not a published customer churn statistic. A reduction in paid activity might change an account's spending without showing that the customer has abandoned the product entirely.

Use this example when asking any vendor about retention: does the metric cover customers leaving, users becoming inactive or revenue moving between plans? Request the definition and period before comparing it with another product's headline.

When reviewing alternatives in team chat software, test the actual conversations, permissions and integrations your team needs. Other customers' decisions can guide your questions, but your pilot should supply the evidence for your own purchase.

How Should You Evaluate Cancellation Stories?

Read the original account and identify what actually happened. A complaint about a renewal quote, a threat to leave and confirmation that a replacement is live are different kinds of evidence.

  • Check whether the buyer describes a completed cancellation, a downgrade or only a plan to investigate alternatives.
  • Note the product, contract period and business requirements, then compare them with your own circumstances.
  • Look for the replacement workflow and its ongoing operating costs rather than assuming the old bill disappeared without new work.

Account for vendor lock-in: low visible departures do not prove satisfaction if moving records and integrations is difficult. Equally, visible complaints do not prove that the product is unsuitable for customers with different needs.

When Should You Stay or Switch?

Keep paying when the product performs essential work and the total cost remains acceptable. Use renewal discussions to clarify support, future commitments and the rights you would need if your requirements changed.

Consider switching when a tested alternative meets the requirements and the expected benefits justify switching costs. Use our Build vs. Buy Calculator if owning a defined workflow is a realistic option rather than assuming every subscription needs replacement.

Before cancelling, complete a software migration plan covering exports, permissions, integrations and required records. Put the notice deadline, migration owner and final billing check in the same plan.

Record why you stayed or left so the next buyer can distinguish a product limitation from a contract or implementation issue. A useful review explains the work involved and the outcome, not just whether the experience was positive or negative.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good SaaS churn rate?

There is no universal target that fits every customer segment and contract model. Compare the same period, customer definition and revenue measure before judging a vendor's figure.

Does high churn mean a vendor is bad?

Not necessarily. Customers can leave because their needs change, so investigate the reasons and whether they apply to your business.

Can revenue churn be negative?

Net revenue churn can be negative when expansion from existing customers exceeds lost recurring revenue. That does not mean no customers left.

Are cancellation complaints a churn rate?

No. Complaints do not provide a complete count of departing customers or the starting customer base needed to calculate a rate.

Does a downgrade count as churn?

A downgrade can contribute to revenue churn without counting as a lost customer. Check the vendor's definition before comparing its reported metrics.
